Who Maintains the Fire Hydrants within The Fairways?

The association has researched this question on multiple occasions over the years...and unfortunately every time we look into it, we get a different answer. As recently as 2021, we were told by the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) inspector that our hydrants belonged to Washoe County and the county was responsible for maintaining them. The county had reportedly fallen behind on testing and Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) was being given a contract to take over testing. Because the hydrants were not being adequately repainted, the association has budgeted for periodic repainting of the hydrants to ensure that they always meet the standards of our neighborhood.

Per the July, 2025, TMWA E-Newsletter, public fire hydrant maintenance was described as the responsibility of TMWA.

In July, 2026, the association was contacted by the new TMFPD fire marshal and told that we were responsible for testing and maintaining the hydrants because since they are on private property. We also contacted TMWA and were told that our hydrants belong to the association.

We were advised by the fire marshal that Fire Code amendment section 507.5.5 requires that a minimum clear space of (7-1/2 feet shall be maintained to both sides directly in front of the front pumper connection and these clearance requirements shall apply to any public or private hydrant.
